review 1: Geneticist Silas Williams shoulders a hefty responsibility, in that he must ensure that the United States wins the Olympic Gladiator competition yet again. In this live, televised battle, fierce creations fight to the death. Only one rule exists: no human DNA can be found in the competitors. This year the American team has taken a different route, and has enlisted the help of a supercomputer to create their monster. However, it soon becomes apparent that this creature might be more than they bargained for…It was an okay thriller I guess. Like Jurassic Park meets Gladiator. There wasn’t much in terms of character development, and it had a heck of a lot of plot holes, but if you’re looking for a decent thriller I’d suggest that you give this a try. It had potential. ... moreIn my opinion it just didn’t deliver as spectacularly as I’d originally hoped.
review 2: There has been a new sport added to the Olympics. Countries genetically engineer gladiators to fight to the death. The contest is a mixture of nationalism as well as technical innovation. The newest US gladiator has been designed by a supercomputer and is like nothing else seen before. There are some human characters as well, but they are mostly filler and caricatures. I picked this book up because of the splashes and reviews associating it with Michael Crichton. This book does contain the science gone amuck theme prevalent in Crichton's book but that is about it. From the very beginning of the novel you can see how it is going to end. You have to accept that over and over again the humans are basically idiot fools who can't take even the most basic steps to assure their safety around animals DESIGNED TO KILL. I enjoyed the book as a pulpy read, but don't have incredibly high expectations. less

I liked the idea and the concept perhaps more than the writing, but it was a fast, fun, summer read.
