review 1: This is one weird little alternate history. Although there are a LOT of loose ends that aren't tied up at the end, the initial premise is so unusual that it's worth reading: scientists have proven that the age of the earth is 5800 years, and that radio-carbon dating and such support that, as well as genetics. (Or have they??? There is more than one way to read their science.) Anyway, a fossil dig on the island of Flores has exposed bones of "hobbits" that may overthrow everything they think they know about the non-evolution of the human race. Neat touch: the bibliography at the end of all the "journal articles" cited in the book.
review 2: Ted Kosmatka's "Prophet of Bones" is the story of Paul Carlsson a a scientist who specializes in identifying bones in a lab... more. When information out of a dig he's on contradicts known science & that dig is shut down he's violently attacked & nearly loses an eye. From there this thriller mixes a bit of science fact & science fiction as this mystery unravels in a way that at times seems more farfetched than anything else. Kosmatka's story while being easy to follow is at times uneven in it's telling with violence & religion mixed in to a point that is confusing to follow. The ending is a bit abrupt with a climax that seems reminiscent of something out of Crichton. "Prophet of Bones" is a book that honestly looks far better than it really is & if anything is just another average offering this year in a genre that it has no clue where it belongs. less
