review 1: The humanization of a struggle I was completely ignorant of. You hear or read of wars, uprising etc. in various parts of the world but may never put a face on them. It's so easy being an American to gloss over atrocities when they don't directly impact us. We tend to rely on public media to tell us what to be indignant about and often it meets some media mogul's agenda. Pay attention to "this" because - insert hidden agenda, oil etc, here. Fabulously written, engaging story. I would highly recommend.
review 2: I couldn't really connect with Viola. I read SOLD by Patricia McCormick which was also written in a similar style of free verse, but this book was different. It was as touching, I guess. The readers never really get attached to the characters, it's just a... more story to read. I live in central Maine, so I have been through Portland a few times, and it was interesting to read about the refugees coming here. It makes me wish I lived down there so that I could be friends with all of them. But anyway, this book wasn't bad, but it wasn't the greatest either. less
