review 1: I am a great discworld fan, but have not read much of Pratchett's other work (yet). So this collection of short stories was an ideal introduction. As with most short story collections, it was a bit hit and miss, and I felt it definitely picked up the pace once we were safely back inside the discworld realm. This collection shows Pratchett really was a writer right from the start. Take this description of a hallway from the first paragraph of the first story, written when he was only 13..."imagine the interior of a storm cloud. Sprinkle liberally with ash and garnish with sulphur to taste ". Intriguing from the get go. There are so many gems sprinkled throughout these stories that we all recognise, a spot on swipe on government bureaucracy, the motives behind someone "telli... moreng you this as a friend", a national anthem that officially has mainly mumbling for the second verse etc. All pure gold, which enables you to quickly move on from the parts that just make you go "huh?" Hit and miss... but gee the hits are good!
review 2: Fantastic collection of short stories neatly showing the development of Pratchett as a writer, with introductions from the man himself. I particularly liked the 50% of the stories that were not Diskworld, as whilst I love the Diskworld itself, I find that the novels do it justice (and most of the Diskworld short stories feature characters developed in depth elsewhere). His non-Diskworld stuff had a much more significant chance to surprise - as the characters were unknowns - and each of them delivered a satisfying and unexpected end which I thoroughly enjoyed. less
