Castles Ever After
review 1: I find myself liking books where authors turn typical plots or tropes on their head. Isolde is tired of being the heroine in other people's stories, and takes over a run-down, spooky, castle. But instead of madwoman-in-the-attic, tormented gothic we get a funny, charming story about two misfits who are attracted to each other and not afraid to act on their desires. While most of the story is light, Dare does address the rather contemporary issue of what happens when fans become too attached to their favorite figures/characters, and feel a sense of ownership over them or control over their fate. After all, they are famous because of fans, right? While not as serious as Dare's Spindle Cove series in addressing social topics, this was worth reading and I look forward to the se... morecond book in the series.
review 2: Tessa Dare is one of the only writers who has ever written a Regency era romance that doesn't make me throw up in my mouth, but while I find many of her stories enjoyable, this one was a bit off for me. There was a very poorly defined sense of the period present, with the characters acting in very contemporary ways in several instances. Additionally, there were references to various pop culture in-jokes peppered all throughout the manuscript. Maybe for uber-fans this is a secret handshake sort of thing, but for me, it was just really distracting to wonder why the characters were referencing lines from movies or why there was a group of LARPers running around, and so on. less

A re-read (by audiobook this time.) I still love this, and will probably listen again.
