review 1: Medusan Seremela Telemar reluctantly agrees to go after her rebellious niece one more time for her sister. Vetta has fled to Devil's Gate, a wild open town in Nevada with the law is absent. Vampire lawyer Duncan Turner insists on going with Seremela, hoping for a chance to gain her romantic interest.I was thrilled to see that Harrison's heroine was a medusa as they have fascinated me from the first. I do wish this had been a much longer story, with lots more danger in Devil's Gate, but this is still an engrossing tale of romance and danger. 4.5 out of 5.
review 2: I liked this short story. Once again that spelled Elder Tarot card deck is in play. After a young medusa steals the deck of cards, she ends up somewhere she never thought she would be. Waiting to
... morebe hanged at dawn. If she had only paid attention to the cards. After all they were never meant to be hers. The two main characters in this story have been seen in earlier novels. Duncan, a vampyre, and Seremela a medusa, have both had small roles in Storm's Heart and Serpent's Kiss. Duncan has agreed to help Seremela retrieve her wild niece from the lawless town of Devil's Gate. It allows him to spend more time with Seremels, something he is looking forward to. He has had his eye on her for personal reasons for some time now. But he's also concerned about her going off on her own to someplace like Devil's Gate. Even though she is very capable of using her snakes to defend herself, he knows she is too soft for what she is likely to find at Devil's Gate.I liked seeing these two characters again. And they have a past together, so their romance didn't feel as rushed as it has in the other novellas. And our mysterious deck of Tarot cards finds a new owner at the end of the story. I'm betting that's not the last time we see them. less
