review 1: The "hard problem" of consciousness (Chalmers) enountered in trying to understand what reality is and our place in it, is a fascinating one, too seldom confronted by mainstream scientists. Dr. Nagel's effort is a provocative one, if a little heavy going at times for a civilian like me. It's a short book, emphasizing careful, step-by-step logical progression of thought rather than elaborate academic footnoting. My other favorite book in this area is "The Quantum Enigma" by US Santa Cruz professors Rosenblum and Kuttner, which I highly recommend.
review 2: Nagel is correct about one thing - naturalism doesn't have all the answers, and may never will in and of itself, but is that already not obvious enough? Does the collective community of naturalists and athei
... morests really purport to have all the answer of reality? I don't think so. Nor do I think that any of the questions raised in this book show that neo-darwinianism is "false", and I don't even think Nagel believes that, I think it's just a catchy tagline to get people to buy this short, disconnected, rambling, poorly edited, ridiculously self-referential "book".These are big questions and deserve serious discussion. I don't think Nagel has contributed much to this conversation. I think maybe he could have, had this book not been so poorly written. Some problems I had with it:- Completely arbitrary chapter demarcation (chapters divided into subchapters mid-thought)- Run-on sentences with multiple polarization flips when a much more concise statement could have been made- Unrepentantly self-referential ("as I said previously", "I've left this question open", "I don't have time to answer", etc).Worst of all, he presents many viewpoints of differing schools of thought in a way that it is very easy to get confused if he is sharing his own viewpoint or of others. That is because his mind is not made up about anything.Nagel is thinking out loud here. He hasn't pinned something down that he wants to share. less

I believe Nagel is a naturalist. He rejects the neo-darwinian synthesis, a good read.
