review 1: Set between “Alien” and “Aliens” we find Ripley’s escape pod being diverted to put her, once again, up against the dreaded Aliens. A mining colony disturbs and Alien nest and both the planet and the orbiting ship become infected, can Ripley, dragged out of cryogenic sleep, help save the day?Fans of the series will have in the back of their minds where Ripley ends up at the start of “Aliens” which becomes a bit of a spoiler and a challenge for the author. The book itself is in reality a blend of both the first two films, trapped on a spaceship with an alien and then on a planet. That apart, I thought it was well delivered with characters you cared about and wanted to survive.
review 2: As are most SciFi readers, I am a huge Alien fan. I grew up with
... more the movies and Dark Horse comics. I chiseled out my own survival in the halls of my childhood home with my Nerf guns and karate armor, pretending to fight off a local alien infestation. Memories…Yet somehow, I missed out on the movie novelizations and books that were published in the 1990s. Before diving into the Steve Perry books, I latched onto the newer series from Titan books. In the first installment to the new Alien series, Tim Lebbon, a renowned writer whom I was first introduced to by his Star Wars novels, creates an original story that takes place between the first Alien and the second Aliens.Out of the Shadows is fast-paced and entertaining. One thing about Lebbon, he knows how to write action. From the initial accident in space that invites some unwanted guest onto the Marion to the reluctant journey onto LV178, the action and suspense satisfies. I think I read this book with a goofy grin on my face….The story unfolds as Ripley and the surviving crew enter an alien ship that holds greater secrets than those exposed in Alien. The story quickly becomes a struggle to survive and leave the planet, which is the best aspect of the series: killing Xenomorphs!Once again, the action is non-stop until the end. Even the weapons, such as the “water-gun” that spits acid, adds something new and crunchy to the mix. And for anyone familiar with the Aliens comic book series, a smidge of brain-erase helps to keep the story going!Alien: Out of the Shadows revives the Alien universe for a new generation of readers. I hope filmmakers are looking at these new books from Titan, because they make great material for more movies!5/5 Stars**An advanced copy was provided by Titan Books to SFBook.com for an honest review less
