review 1: Coldbrook is a very entertaining, old-fashioned, science-fiction/horror novel. The monster movies of the 1950's taught us that there are some things that man was not meant to screw around with, that if you cheat on your wife bad things are going to happen to you, and when you break the rules and ignore the safety protocols you'll live (for a while) to regret it. Well, all three of these prime directives are violated in Coldbrook, and the result is zombie apocalypse... not to mention inter-dimensional war. It's a fast-paced page-turner, to coin a cliché, and a lot of fun, though a couple of points bothered me. First, there were beings called Inquisitors that I didn't think were very well developed or explained, but there were enough other narrative threads to keep my inter... moreest. Also, though Coldbrook is a facility located deep in the Appalachian Mountains, I never got any sense of rural Appalachian atmosphere. There were several places where distinctly British phrases or spellings were included ("bonnet" instead of "trunk" or "tyre" rather than "tire"), and I thought the more Americanized usages would have kept the plot flowing better. Anyway, Coldbrook would be a great choice for any Walking Dead fan waiting for the new season to begin, or for zombie fans who have already enjoyed Brian Keene and Mira Grant. (I was happy to win my copy in a Goodreads Firstreads Giveaway.)
review 2: I love a zombie book, or pretty much any apocalyptic tale. Recently I've read the majors - The Walking Dead novels and World War Z. They're great. I also love anything with secret research facilities. I'm a sucker for them. See The Stand and The Passage for examples - both great. Chuck in a multiverse aspect and I'm in with bells and whistles. COLDBROOK manages to combine all three very effectively. Most of the main characters are flawed but likeable. The journey they each take is varied and driven by different motivations, creating net resting sub-plots. The "zombies" in the tale are the 28 Days Later variety, and most feared, the fast kind! I love how the world descends into chaos as the outbreak spreads but most of all I love the secret facility/multiverse aspect of the story. It really lends it both a freshness in terms of genre clichés, or lack thereof, and adds an air of desperation and hopelessness on a scale never seen before (can't say more without adding spoilers). It's a real page turner with some nice ideas and great characters. If you like horror and especially zombies, it's well worth a read. Probably a better read than this attempt at a review! less
