review 1: A very good and honest read of the Trail of Tears for midgrade to young teen. The true violence is present, but it is written in a way that younger readers would be able to understand. Just enough horror to show the true events of history, but not too much to scar the reader at that age. I really appreciate historical fiction that does not shy away from the horrible truth, especially those book written for kids or teens. Triggers include racism against Native Americans, grisly deaths (burning alive, smallpox, freezing, wolf-attack), ghosts, child-deaths, and abuse of a minor by hanging her from a tree by her hands.
review 2: Isaac is a Choctaw boy who does not survive the Trail of Tears, but as a ghost continues to follow, guide, and protect his family. This is
... more a great historical fiction read about a period in history children may not know much about. It’s also a wonderful adventure and survival story, with a few elements of magic woven in as well. This would be a great book to use in classrooms. It also benefits from a really great cover (a black panther against a red background) that will attract readers to pick it up; the story will hook them with the first line: “Maybe you have never read a book written by a ghost before.” less
