review 1: Even though this book is fiction much of it was based on true events. The story unfolds mainly through the eyes of Madu ( a young black slave whom was free until the British helped a warring clan beat and capture Madu's clan) and Tom ( a young English sailor). Reading parts of this book left me unsettled with the torture to human's and explained their suffering. Even through the adversities the boys face they remain friends. The journey takes the reader to Africa, Spain, England and returning to Africa. The author made us a part of this book instead of just telling a story. Highly recommend.
review 2: I could not put this book down. It should definitely be part of the American School curriculum. I learned so much and it filled me with a new passion for his
... moretorical fiction. The author has created a sensory rich atmosphere filled with characters and locations that come to life. The book enables us to put ourselves into the skin of a young African boy and see, smell, hear and feel all his incredible adventures and horrors as clearly as if we were there. less
