review 1: What a great book! Keller starts out by using research to debunk the distortions of marriage prevalent in our culture (ie fairytale marriage, cohabitation, hookup culture, no-fault divorce, etc) and then offers the alternative: biblical marriage that glorifies God and sanctifies us. Tim and his wife Kathy go on to explain the mission and picture of marriage and they offer practical advice to help prepare for marriage if you are unmarried or work through tough patches, love and understand your spouse more fully, embrace your identity as man or woman, and confront your own self-centeredness and wounds if you are married. I especially appreciated the "Essence of Marriage" chapter in which Keller defines what true love is and how a covenantal marriage doesn't stifle love, but ... moreallows it to find its fullness in promise and action towards a spouse. Definitely recommended reading for married and unmarried alike!
review 2: Challenging, and very helpful book on marriage. At times, early on, I felt that 'yes', Tim Keller is a bit of a nerd (as he describes his younger self in the book). So many references, good as they are, from other writers and experts. Also, I felt overwhelmed at times by the portrayal of the call of marriage. Though Keller admits to his/their own many difficulties during their marriage, the book's high call seemed too much at times. However, as I overcame my own reaction to this, and feelings of 'oh my' about my own living as a husband, I found real help and wisdom within this book. I had to try to humbly hear what he was saying and accept it, and I found perceptive strength and help through his advice and words. Perhaps this book lacks a real, emotional feeling that Keller has struggled, and felt more like 'I've got this sorted, this is how you must live too'. That may be unfair, and may reflect more my own state of mind that the book's contents. But having said all of this, this has great stuff throughout. Also, check out Keller's talk to Google Executives about this book (on YouTube) as he gives a 30 minute or so that gives a very useful summary of the whole book. less

Totally changed so many misconstrued notions I've harbored in my marriage. Simply life-changing

A bit repetitive, but a good reminder of what marriage really is vs. the way we've idolized it.
