review 1: I don't remember how I first discovered this book in the audio form. I listened to it about 2 years ago. I liked it, but it didn't leave a big impression on me.One day while driving along with Marilyn, and looking for something to listen to that we could both enjoy, I returned to King's Cross. It was a random chapter, the one on Mark chapter 5. The way Keller tells the story of the raising from the dead of Jarius's daughter and the healing of the woman who dared to touch the garment of Jesus moved me greatly. I wondered why I hadn't loved this book more. So as I so often do when I like an audio book, I book the hardbound book as well.I really appreciate learning more about the life of Jesus. Keller is not approaching this work as a Bible scholar, but rather as an exegesis ... moreof the words of the Gospel according to Mark with commentary related to the lives of people he has counseled, quotes from C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald and J.R.R. Tolkien. It is very devotional in nature. It is not written to debate accuracy of the record but to declare boldly that Jesus is the Christ and that because of His life and death, we can be filled with joy and hope for a resurrection of glory. Chapter one is entitled "The Dance". Keller tries to explain one of the most fundamental Christian creeds, that of the Holy Trinity. It is a tall order. In fact, the basis of that belief is not Biblical (in my view) and is contradicted in the scriptures. As a member of the LDS Church, my belief is contrary to the Trinity and I believe in the Godhead as being composed of three distinct, separate yet perfectly unified beings. This is the only chapter that I did not thoroughly enjoy. I intend to return to this book over and again as I study the life, miracles and teachings of Jesus. If you are discouraged or feeling skeptical about life or your circumstances in life, I recommend this book.
review 2: There are a number of great Christian authors out there, but in my opinion Tim Keller is one of the best. A minister at one of the largest churches in New York City, he has years of real world experience helping meet people where they are and introducing them to the love of Jesus Christ. His love of God and man shows strongly in the pages of his books. This present book is a detailed review of the gospel of Mark, and Keller uses the opportunity to peer into the life and teachings of Jesus to show us why we should believe in the man Jesus who claimed to be the son of God sent from heaven to forgive our sins. In this quest, the book explores many of the events and teachings in Jesus' life, offering insights that even lifelong Christians might not have ever considered. An example of this would be in Mark 14:62 where Jesus said:"I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."Keller points out that clouds, in this instance, refers to God's shekinah glory. In other words, Jesus was saying "I will come with the fully majesty and glory of God" (which, translated, means "I am God"). These are the sorts of wonderful insights that litter this books pages and which are such a delight to stumble upon. But beyond these, the real meat of this book focuses on something that so many have missed throughout the years, and that is the concept of our identity. Keller points out that true identity (which is defined as that which we place our trust in to take care of us, to save us, to make our lives have meaning and purpose) can only come through Jesus Christ. Keller talks about how so many people place their trust in wealth and job and families and their own health, etc. But that all of these are, in essence, false gods that will do nothing but fail us.It's easy to find Christian books that end up being either too technical and dry, or that are very shallow and don't have any meat in them. Thankfully Tim Keller's books are neither of these. Reading him is a genuine treat. He writes well so that you find yourself reading page after page without noticing the time. And while the books are not at all technical, you still find yourself coming away with such great insight.Even if you're a nonbeliever, but is open to considering the Christian Worldview, pick this book up and give Tim Keller a hearing. In fact, read all of his books (start with the Reason for God. It's one of his first and still one of my favorites of his). It is an effort well worth the time. less
