review 1: When I read a bit of this on the Amazon site, I wanted to read more. It's that kind of book, it pulls you in. I bought the paperback rather than the e-book because my husband likes Downton Abbey as well as I do, and this seemed to be similar. Perhaps the publisher planned it because of the TV popularity, but this book is definitely one of a kind. (Or, since there are others following it, which I haven't yet read---one series of a kind.) As I read, I knew what would happen. I was sure of it---but I was wrong. (And I love to be proven wrong when I'm reading!) A great historical fiction read. My only complaint---the ending was abrupt. I mean, the story was all there and the pieces of the plot all completed, but it went too fast. A few more pages, maybe even a chapter or two m... moreore to fully live the ending of this episode---that's all I ask.
review 2: Probably more like 2.5 stars. The book started off slowly, it was not very engaging, and I thought it was going to be predictable. I was considering not finishing it, but since I had already purchased it (in preparation for a long flight, wanting to be sure of having enough to read), I pressed on. The story did become more engaging and was not as predictable as I previously thought. It did end up keeping me interested to find out the "secret", but the ending was very abrupt and not satisfying at all. Why did she choose who she did? Did she get money or any birth-rights? I had many more questions... Other writers of character-driven series are able to satisfactorily finish books, completing the story of one of the main characters while leaving you interested in finding out what happens to the others, but this one didn't even finish the first story, almost like she had a word limit and had to wrap it up quickly. less
