review 1: I read some negative comments about this series, but decided to start it anyway. I am a Downton Abbey fan, and love time period drama's. The fact that ladies had very little say in 1903, is not very surprising. Most daughters were sold into marriage, for money, property, or titles. Royalty could not avoid this, nor the upper crust. One just prayed, that the bridegroom not be to mean, hideous , or controlling. I felt this book shows a fairly accurate description, of the time. It may have needed a better editor, as in some of it's prose, but all, in all, I enjoyed it very much. I am anxious to see what happens to the three main characters in the first novel. it is upsetting that Lords, or high ranking gentlemen took advantage of young house maids, who had no choice in the ma... moretter, and led to their ruin, but unfortunately rape still goes on today. It is good that this is brought to light, because it did not matter who did the attacking, the girl was always at fault. This is brought out in many period drama's, and books. I felt for a first novel T.J. Brown kept my attention, and made me want to read book two.
review 2: This books irks me, but there were parts I loved, so I can give it a right in the middle three! I was recommended this series by a friend with a mutual love (obsession?) for Downton Abbey, and indeed it is set in the same time period with the same issue of class and behavior, women's rights, but also the parties and traditions - all that period stuff we love! BUT, I had issue with the characters. They appealed to me very little at first and seemed to have little substance; then, when I found myself getting into their stories and captivated by what would happen, the ending threw me again! My favorite character did something I didn't like, and my second favorite never rose to the occasion, like the entire book seemed to be hearing for her to do, argh! Maybe that's why there are two more books? Of course I already reserved the next; I have to find out if the sisters stuck to their choices, haha! Soap opera indeed :) less
