review 1: I'm really starting to enjoy the fact that Halo novels spoonfeed you their raison d'etre. I find it charming, in a way. As with "Harvest Contact" telling us straight up Avery Johnson has to "earn back his humanity," in this one we're told that (Jacob?) Keyes "wasn't the commander they needed yet, but was being made into it by the circumstances." 'Thank you, Halo novel,' I said at that point. 'Thank you for pointing that out in case I hadn't picked up on that.' It's less condescending and more helpful guidance.I again found the Covenant POVs jarring, quickly started skipping them, and the novel still works fine. I'm not sure if this is a flaw in the novel, or if I somehow got a less fulfilling experience out of it. Either way.Decent fun, though the "climax" seemed pretty ... moreperfunctory. Curious if there's more Gray Team action out there. Not sure if these prequel novels were a good idea overall.
review 2: I found Cole Protocol to be very entertaining. This book as well as Contact Harvest were different than the original series focusing more on the general life of humans in the middle of a war for their survival than about war machines with the sparta s kicking ass. This book does a bit better job than Contact Harvest though in the sense that it not only focuses on humans living behind enemy lines but also on key figures such as Keyes with new Spartan IIs. Needless to say I read this book rather quickly and I found every bit of it enjoyable. A must read especially if you are reading the series. less
