review 1: This book definitely started out better, but it also grew a bit tiresome by the end. The problems that the dragonriders of Pern are facing throughout the book don't really change, and nothing really gets resolved, either. They keep having falling numbers every time another fall occurs, but there's nothing that is done about it. They all just talk about it and hint to the future. If we got to see where all the little hints dropped in the book will lead in this particular book, it might have been okay, but that isn't the way it worked out.I was pretty interested to see how they work the group relationships into the books. It's like today, with how relationships between people have evolved, and I like that Todd is bringing that kind of change to the Pern books as well. Those ... moredifficulties are present everywhere, and people who deal with them have the same problems the people in these books do.I still do love the characters. Kindan was great from Todd's first trilogy, though he's mellowed and is moody and jealous in this book. Lorana definitely was not at her full potential here, and I'm not sure how I liked it for the end with her. She's paying a lot for Pern, though I'm sure she's going to get her dragon gold again in the future. And I love the dragongirl in Fiona, of course. I don't know how realistic her youth is for her responsibilities, but on Pern with the dangers faced every day, I can see it to some extent.
review 2: Can a fantasy/sci-fi novel "jump the shark"? How far can one stretch the "suspension of disbelief" for a created world with it's own set of beliefs and morals? Now, I'm not what I'd consider a prude, but seriously? Not only has Todd continued with the older-man-(technically under-age)younger-girl lead pairing, but she's had a threesome during her gold dragon's mating flight while the male rider of the successful bronze dragon was comatose.Wow. Convoluted much?Did Fiona really NEED to be with Kindan? The story would probably have worked perfectly well if they hadn't had sex. There's no reason Fiona and Lorana couldn't have been close friends anyway. We know they're both special, strong women who think of others and Pern before themselves. Now I'll go read "Dragon's Time" and hope something slightly different happens... less

Better than the book before. It seems Todd has his rhythm down and his ideas well in hand. :)

This book was a hard read. It was confusing and jumpy in parts.
