review 1: I really enjoyed this book, couldn't put it down over a long weekend and was hooked from the start by the story of this dysfunctional family and the clear narrative voice of the young man at its core. Biscuit is every teenage boy you've ever known in so many ways, but his life has been far from conventional and he has a feeling it's only going to get worse. Throughout the novel he tells us he's both physically and mentally inadequate to cope with the pressure of his circumstances but in reality with some very strong female characters urging him to believe in himself he proves that he is more than capable. For me, it goes up with that great American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird and also with some of my all time Aussie faves such as Jasper Jones; We Don't Live Here Anymore;... more The Last Ride & Past the Shallows.
review 2: I enjoyed this book. It is a blend of a little bit of Southern fiction, a lot of coming of age, a tiny bit of mysticism all wrapped around a murder mystery. I found the main characters likable. This makes the book a compelling read as we follow our young characters through their confrontation with the grotesque. If you did not support these main characters, it would be easy to decide that the book contains too much violence and depravity. But, since I could find myself pulling for them, I was able to get through to the end. less
