review 1: This started out strong then commenced to jumping all over the place. I was more than enjoying the Dollmaker arc and then I felt as if I was missing pages. Maybe it was my fault but I wasn't familiar with some characters and I felt like the writing suggested that I was suppose to be fully aware of who they were. Can't believe I just rated any thing Batman below a 4/5... but my expectations were high for this and it just didn't deliver. Not really in a rush for vol 2 any time soon.
review 2: To start with, I'll talk about the art like I do with all the comics I review. For the most part the art was really good. Tony S Daniel's women were the highlights. They all looked good in design and everything. As did Alfred and all the rest of the "normal" people. There is
... morelots of detail in his clothing, faces and backgrounds. Where I have a problem with his art is in his concept for 3 of the main characters: Batman, Joker and Penguin. I've never been a fan of short earred Batman ever when Frank Miller drew him that way and the Batman suit in this collection is clearly inspired by Miller's work. Now for the villians. Both Penguin and Joker were over the top weird looking. Daniel must have had American McGee inspired nightmares to come up with those 2 concepts. I know he was going for a darker tone but he took it too far. Then there is the matter of the horrendous art from the several page Catwoman story stuck in the middle of this collection for no apparent reason. Overall I give the art 3.5 stars. It would be higher if Daniel's core characters were up to par with his supporting cast and had the Catwoman story been left out entirely. Now to the story. Swiss cheese has less holes than this plot does. It starts off strong with the Joker and introducing Dollmaker but then switches to something completely different at the end without any kind of transition at all. It's like his editors told him to take the story in a different direction and he never bothered to tie up the first storyline. Then there is the Catwoman story I mentioned earlier in the art section. It being stuck right in the middle of the collection made about as much sense as tits on a bull. Story 2 stars.Unless you're a diehard Batman fan that absolutely has to have everything, stay away from this one. There is much better stuff out there less

Honestly, I wasn't very impressed with this book. There are basically two 3-issue arcs loosely tied together. The first, dealing with Dollmaker, is the better of the two, although that's not saying much. Batman gets beaten up a lot, Joker gets victimized (albeit willingly?), and a little girl becomes a vicious pawn in the game. It works, but it's not particularly strong. The second arc, dealing with Wayne's girlfriend and a break-in of Penguin's new Iceberg Lounge just feels scattered. The 'why' behind the story doesn't ever seem explained, and, while some family details of the characters make it a little more relevant, even at the end it just feels like an action scene in need of a reason. The story and the art feel very loose and unrestrained, and it just didn't connect with me at all.

Meh. It was just "okay". Again, sketches at the back were my favorite.

I'm not in for the long haul on this one.
