review 1: “Batman Detective Comics” In “Batman Detective Comics” by Tony S. Daniel, the story line is dark and gritty. Basically, Batman has proof that the joker has killed 144 people of the past 6 years, thats 19 deaths a year. In the beginning batman is tracking the joker down. After batman finds the joker (after a long altercation that I won’t spoil), batman gets the joker to a doctor by the name of “doctor arkham” (foreshadowing) in a mental facility, he comes to the conclusion that catching him was too easy. When batman gets back to the mental facility, he discovers that the joker is gone, and the only thing left of the joker is his face, cut off and on the wall.Through the plot events, we see author’s message that we can't identify a person by only his face. ... moreWe understand this theme through events such as the part were joker literally gets his face cut off. An important quote from the book that reinforces the theme is “ which means i have no time to make it out alive” on page 53. This is important because it shows batman's character and how selfless he is trying to save someone he doesn't know very well. This book is action-packed, haunting and memorable, because it takes such a different approach to the characters, yes they are still the same characters with the same back story, but when for example it shows joker being more independent as usual and crazier (as if he can get any more crazy), for example when he cuts off his face. I'm not going to say that was the main reasons joker was more on edge than usual, but is a key plot point in this ongoing story. This book is fast and very entertaining it is definitely worth taking the time to read because they use the characters personalities very well.
review 2: Somewhere along the way, "Batman" became an excuse for "excessive violence" and uber-violence, perhaps because DC was jealous of Punisher MAX or something. I do not deny Batman (as an idea/world) has a dark side - as much as I enjoy the Adam West Batman, the "Dark Knight" aspect to the character is just as true. But that does not mean we need this much blood: removed faces, blown-out brains (Night of the Owls), etc. As Daniel even proves himself by the end of this collection, he can tell decent Batman stories without grotesque indulgences appealing only to the base visceral impulses of man. I'm sure many of you will disagree with me and my weak tummy - that's fine. Part of my frustration with the violence in the Dollmaker story was the sheer absence of any meaningful payoff: it goes nowhere, delivers predictable moments of "detection" and suspense, and stops. The second group of stories is a little better, but it also either expects too much of us, or just assumes we know what is going on, or uses too much flashback with Batman knowing too much to be very believable - or possibly a combination of all of them. I know Daniel didn't stay long on the series, but he did show a little bit of promise - it just doesn't go anywhere meaningful here. less

I don't know what it is about New 52 Batman, but I just don't think anybody has really gotten it right yet. In the main Batman title, I find Scott Snyder comes up with great ideas to inject Batman into, but doesn't execute very well and really doesn't make Batman all that interesting of a character. Here, Tony Daniel actually makes an interesting Batman. When he's on the prowl, he's ruthless and intense (as opposed to Snyder's version of Batman, which is a bit of a wimp). Even better, Daniel actually makes Bruce Wayne interesting as well, giving him a social life outside of perpetual brooding. Sadly, Daniel doesn't create good enough scenarios for his characters. Dollmaker is forgettable, and the story with Penguin is plain dull.If only Daniel's Batman and Bruce could be injected into the scenarios created by Snyder. THEN maybe we'd finally have a good New 52 Batman comic.

I've read all the Batman books that dealt with the Joker storyline but this one was fiendishly left out of the big Joker "Death in a Family" volume. So I knew I had to go back one day and read just exactly how and under what circumstances the J. had his face removed. The whole Joker story is good and we keep meeting new psycho people who will end up patients at Arkham. When the Joker flees, the Batman has his hands full pretty quickly as he and his girlfriend attend a gala aboard Cobblepot's floating iceberg casino. With the Penguin up to no good, what else is new, he's got a crew of all-new super villains joining him and has a double-cross or thee to maybe make-up some time.
