review 1: A little mouse decides that it's time to travel to America, but he can't go by ship because of all the cats guarding the shipyard. After getting inspired by the wings of bats, he decides to FLY to America. Thus begins his quest to build the perfect flying machine. After his successful flight, we learn that a little boy was inspired by the mouse's adventures. That boy was Charles Lindbergh. I loved the thick pages, sepia tones, and wonderful illustrations in this book. I also love books about mice!
review 2: I want to own this book! The illustrations are gorgeous and almost tell the story without the words. They evoke the desired mood perfectly! I like that the animals look like animals - they may be given certain human traits (the mouse reads and builds
... more flying machines) but he LOOKS like a mouse that you would expect to see running across your floor. He doesn't wear clothes or walk on two feet (mostly). I love that while the story was translated from German, the depiction of the German newspapers in the pictures kept the German text. I certainly hope to see more from this illustrator!!! less
