review 1: I didn't review this straight away and so ended up reading the book a second time to remember the course of events, which went thusly:Book opens to grieving Mallory at the beginning of a late summer house party. Nearly a year since her finance's death, she still hasn't emerged from her self-imposed mourning, and plans to spend the house party in solitude in her room.Enter Adam, long-time friend of the family given his and the older Byron brothers school days together. He's always had a tendre for Mallory, but his estate was never in a condition to be a suitable match (without looking like he was sniffing around for her dowry). But since his father's death, his wise investments have paid off and though still recovering, his estate is respectable. And at this house party... more, his singular goal is improving Mallory's happiness. Principally he does this by rescuing her from spending all day, everyday with the other ladies, and instead takes her out riding. These excursions breed opportunities for intimate dialogue where Mallory is able to talk through her grief, her guilt, and the nightmares that plague her. Which is how Adam ends up in her bed - *mostly* keeping her company after a nightmare - when the entire Bryon family comes in to announce that Meg's gone into labor. They're somewhat hastily required to marry, much to Adam's sheer delight. However - *and please note, this is an extremely common yet asinine plot point in these types of romances* - he actively decides not to tell her he loves her. But their honeymoon is great, though neither one speaks it, they are in love, and eventually Adam says it. By this point of course, Mallory's somewhat shocked because she thought Adam married her mostly to be honorable. And before she can really process and reciprocate MICHAEL HARGREAVES COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD. Apparently, the robber that took his ring was also found dead on the battlefield, so that's whose body got buried, while meanwhile, Hargreaves was in a French prison. He shows up to Clybourne House in London - which is where Mallory and Adam are staying for a short trip to London - and embraces and kisses Mallory straight away, assuming her to still be his financee. It is in this embrace that Adam walks in. Queue Adam being a total dick for the rest of the book. He beats up Hargreaves. Demands Mallory never speak to, write, or see him again. Requires they leave for Gresham Manor the next morning. Not feeling right about not being able to properly say good-bye, Mallory writes Michael. Michael shows back up at Gresham Manor and accuses Adam of forcing her to marry him. Mallory then learns that Adam has been burning Michael's letters to her and leaves him, returning to Bryon House. Michael calls on her there and they share one last kiss. Mallory realizes that even though she loved Michael (and even though Adam's been a total dick the past couple weeks), she loved Adam first and best. She returns to Adam, and Adam apologizes. They live happily ever after. But poor, poor Michael. Total crap for him.
review 2: The book was an unexceptional read. Even the sex scenes were not enough to distract me from musing about my (boring) day. Tracy tried to make it different from other heroine mourns lost love and finds new love stories by making the new love extremely possessive and jealous of (gasp!) not dead old love for the last one third of the story. But this is really just adding one cliched plot on top of another. less
