review 1: No-One Ever Has Sex On A Tuesday by Tracy Bloom was absolutely freaking fantastic! It had lots of comical drama that had me giggling, but then also a lot of emotion too, which contrasted perfectly. It kept me hooked all the way through with Tracy's fabulous mix of characters and her crazy plot. It was brilliant in every way. Firstly, Tracy's cover. It's not on my list of the prettiest covers out there, but I do really like it. I didn't even notice the calendars in the background until I took a closer look. The calendars work perfectly with the story itself, with Tracy's main character being pregnant etc, so it tied in pretty well with what was going on. Tracy's characters were absolutely awesome. Their dialogue was spot-on and very enjoyable to read. I really liked Tracy's... more main female character, Katy. She was lovely. When we first meet Katy, she's pregnant and annoyed with herself for the fact that she got herself into such a messy situation. I found Katy to be down-to-earth, easy going and she made me laugh a lot with some of the things that she would come out with. I really couldn't have put myself in her situation personally. It was a right old mess and I did feel sorry for her. Once you're let in on what happened, it suddenly becomes law that you finish the book, just to see how it all turns out in the end. As well as Katy, there was also her boyfriend Ben. Now, at the beginning, I didn't really take much of a liking to Ben. I found him to be incredibly immature, really silly and I could not have imagined him being a father at all. He made Katy laugh though, even when she didn't want too, and that did make me smile. I guess the way I would describe Ben is by saying that he was a "typical lad." He loved going out drinking with his mates, he loved pratting around and acting stupid, and I think this worried Katy, especially where her baby was concerned. I really wanted Ben to step up his game and take the fact that Katy was pregnant seriously. Thankfully, Ben grows up a hell of a lot throughout the story, and it was overwhelming to read about him coming to terms with the fact that he was going to be an actual dad. Matthew was Katy's first love. They found each other when they were teenagers and were absolutely besotted with each other, until Matthew did something incredibly stupid and ended their relationship. Now, years on, they meet once more at a school reunion and things end up getting way out of hand. My thoughts on Matthew differed throughout the book. Sometimes, I did think he would probably be the best thing for Katy, other times I found him to be kinda' annoying. I mean, Matthew is now married with twins on the way. Why is he still lingering around Katy, trying to get in on the pregnancy? I understand that there was a chance the baby could of been his, but I think he took it a little too far sometimes. Go back to your wife, Matthew! GO! Something that kept me entertained throughout almost the entirety of the book was Ben and Matthew's rivalry against each other. It was so funny! They had a lot of differences between them. Matthew was the suit and tie type, working hard to support his family, and took things very seriously. Ben, on the other hand, didn't take anything seriously. He made jokes out of stupid things and always ended up saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. But I guess, out of the two, I did prefer Ben. Matthew is always telling Katy that Ben is no good, that he is never going to take being a father seriously, but thankfully, Katy ignores him and carries on with what she's got to do. The story in No-One Ever Has Sex On A Tuesday was absolutely brilliant, and I cannot rate it highly enough. It was entertaining, funny, surreal in some parts, and I loved it. Every part. Becca's Books is rating this book with five gold stars. It was an easy read and very enjoyable. Wahoo!
review 2: I read and very much enjoyed Tracy Bloom’s second novel Single Woman Seeks Revenge, so when it was announced that her debut novel No One Ever Has Sex On A Tuesday had been snapped up by Arrow, I was super chuffed for Tracy! And, of course, I knew I would have to read the book, having been waiting ages and ages and was very happy to be sent a copy to review, which was ever so kind of the Arrow ladies! I couldn’t wait to dive in, because it sounded like such a fun, bonkers read and Tracy is a very good writer, so I settled in, anticipating a fun, enjoyable read, but sadly, I finished it feeling… not very much at all.I will preface my review by saying about 80 pages in I stopped to watch the series finale of How I Met Your Mother, my favourite sitcom, and it rather destroyed me (in a good way, I thought it was amazing, but it was also really, really sad because no more brand new episodes of HIMYM) so I went back to my book kinda down, and I was sort of hoping the book would pep me up! It was by no means a bad book, I just didn’t feel it lived up to my expectations. I expected it to be a bit wittier than it was, but I never laughed once, but I suppose can you ask that of a plot that’s about a girl who doesn’t know who the father of her child is?I think that’s why it took me so long to read it – it’s not my kind of plot. When I read the synopsis, the last thing I expected was to find out Katie and Matthew were both attached (although why else would Matthew be at the ante-natal class, I now realise…). There’s no mention of spouses and boyfriends, so it initially seems Katy and Matthew’s one-night-stand was a bit of fun, instead of downright cheating, on both their parts. I wasn’t a fan of that, I don’t agree with cheating and both their reasons for doing it – Katy as “revenge”, Matthew was “drunk” – again, and it just wasn’t really my thing. Katy’s boyfriend was lovely. A bit childish, perhaps, but y’know that’s what you get when you date someone in their twenties! For the character, I liked Katy, I think she was a bit naive, a bit stupid, but not a terrible person (though you must be something if you sleep with a guy even after commenting on him being married), but it was Ben who kept me reading as I liked him so much! Matthew irritated the life out of me, I’ve never met anyone so stuck-up and arrogant and his actions in the birthing suite were embarrassing.I wanted to love No One Ever Has Sex On A Tuesday as much as I did Single Woman Seeks Revenge, and it makes me sad I didn’t. There were some good bits, and I did enjoy a few scenes (the scene at Charlene’s wedding, any scene Daniel appeared in) but it just wasn’t really my type of book, which is entirely on me and my own prejudices – I don’t like cheating, and you have to write something really, really good for me to change my mind) and I just feel the book would have been so much better if Katy was just more honest, earlier on and instead it had hinged on that rather than Katy keeping the secret. I look forward to Tracy’s next release, but this one just wasn’t my cup of tea, though it will be many others. less
