review 1: This audio version was disappointingly tedious. The premise of the book is interesting - magic is drawn from the atmosphere and leaves a residue - soot - which is visible to some of the population. It used to power machines in one country, and as a tool of power in another. There are two main characters - a male and a female - living in different areas of the 'world' in very different cultures. Both have magical abilities, both have very little control over their lives. What I really struggled with was the casual sexism in this novel. Women are marginalised, and, in the second half of the novel they are actively repressed. As the first of a series the pace is glacially slow, with not much happening at all.I have to confess that I didn't finish listening before the audiobook... more became due, and I didn't bother to renew it. I just didn't care enough about either of the main characters to keep going.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book, but was sad to learn I would have to wait for the sequels. Luckily, Ms. Canavan has written many other trilogies and such; so I will wait out the remaining time, by reading her other works. Her world building, for this novel, was interesting. I liked the new magic system. It is always nice to see new elements. The concept of stain was interesting as well...I also enjoyed the multiple POV's. With both a male and female protagonist, she appeals to a wider audience. It doesn't get too confusing, because there are only 2 voices. Also, the characters are foils of each other; so, it will be interesting, if they ever meet, to see the interactions considering the staunch differences in their belief systems. There is a lot of action within the novel which keeps the characters in constant motion. I think this really helps propel the plot forward. The readers are not required to hang everything on character development or plot alone. Canavan spent time on this book and it is very balanced.I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys world building, fantasy, interesting magic systems, and/or young adult protagonists. There is also a steampunk or industrialization element that is prevalent in one of the character's storylines. less
