review 1: Loved this as a kid, still own the complete manga, including 13th volume, prequel and sequel. I was drawn to it because of the beautiful are, Takeshi Obata has talent, and has inspired me to learn how to draw pretty decently, using the series as a good reference for realistic-anime style. The story was addictive, I still laugh reading some parts back. I think I'll love this one even when I'm an adult, or even in a nursing home if I get that far.Let's admit it, L is a lovable character, even if you're on Kira's side. Lots of people (including me) who have read/watched Death Note have gone through what I call the "L phase," which means imitating him in various ways. I still catch myself biting my thumb! But enough with memory lane, glad I read something that inspired m... moree to think and learn.
review 2: So I never actually had the box set, but I read all of these years ago and was just flipping through the first one again, and I thought I'd write a short review. I don't remember each of them individually, as it was a while ago and I read them one after the other. The story as a whole has a fun premise, that there's a notebook one can use to kill anyone in any way imaginable just by writing down their name. It's largely just a fascinating study on power, and how power will be invariably abused, even if the person with said power believes that they are doing a service to the world. I also have a soft spot for hyper-intelligent quasi-villain anti-heroes in Japanese manga, so that was probably a contributing factor. The end was pretty intense, too, while also being kind of perfect, from what I recall. Anyway, I'm sure there were plenty of problematic elements in there somewhere, but I can't remember them off the top of my head apart from the fact that he starts out aiding the law with it by killing "criminals."
