review 1: I'm not sure I like this novel better or the first. I liked seeing the additional creatures in the story, especially the kilin. The tone was also much more serious in this one. I enjoyed learning more about the zoo's workings, but I think what I would like to see more in this whole series are descriptions of the creatures. There are some descriptions, but I think it was telling that the author felt it necessary to include a picture guide in the back of this book versus the other one. I also found myself looking up some of the creatures (which may have just been something that I do anyhow), but is a bit of a pet peeve: if you are writing to a general audience that is not especially prepared for a specialized topic you don't have to dumb it down, but at least describe it wel... morel. I'm not asked for one cent words versus two dollar words, but if you start talking about a creature and describe it as "murdery" that does not help a lot with the appearance. That particular creature I just mentioned does have an adequate description, but not enough do as all so far have returned and been important. Finally, WEREROOSTER! Brilliant!
review 2: Pelly is gone---Logan finds that impossible to believe, but the blood and feathers are too much to dispute. And Pelly, being Pelly, had no friends and a lot of creatures that would be perfectly happy to be rid of her. Including a dragon?Logan managed to save the griffin cubs in time, but the Menagerie might still be shut down if the mystery of what happened to Pelly isn't solved. And they have about a week to find out what really happened. This takes everything crazy and hysterical from the first book and gets even funnier. Marco is an absolute riot, and his family as a whole is even better. Blue and Logan are islands of calm, Zoe is so responsible and endearing, Matthew's deep dark secret is exposed, and a certain suspicious librarian reveals at least a few secrets.I want to keep a whole quote file from these books, because I was constantly pulling bits out to show to friends to laugh about. It's a very fast, fun read . . . with a bit of a cliffhanger, like the last book, but not nearly so bad. I rate this book Recommended. less
