review 1: Loved it. With the caveats that I don't usually read crime/police fiction, and that I read Robert Galbraith's (JK Rowling's) Cuckoo Calling just before--and she is a hard act to follow--I was properly impressed. Dilts does not cuss as much as Rowling, btw. Not by a long shot. For those who live in or near Long Beach, CA, the added treat is that all the action is carefully mapped out for you. Almost to the point of being annoying; in fact, if I lived in Texas or Rhode Island I probably would have found the constant mentioning of streets a bit much. But I don't. I have lived in LB & am now close, so it was fun!Dilts has written three of these Long Beach mysteries. I assume they all feature the same cast so I will be reading the other books as well to catch up. (this was the m... moreost recent in the series, not the first. But the title caught me.)
review 2: A homeless man is burned to death by three teenagers, the act is witnessed by many and they are arrested -- this begins the novel. From this point on, the story involves finding who the homeless man was, why he was killed, and who was really responsible for the killing. Mr. Dilts' writing style is one that I enjoy, mixing in personal memories and interactions with the investigation. Danny Beckett is a detective with a real care for people, even those who have been murdered. The plot is well developed and the cast of characters is interesting and colorful. The author has written two earlier novels in his Long Beach Homicide series, and I am looking forward to reading them as well. less

Reading this book reminds me of what David Foster Wallace wrote, "Pain is pain."
