review 1: This was a pretty satisfying mystery novel. The characters were pretty cool and the references to pop culture were spot on. I felt like the ending was a little too perfect, but also good way of everyone getting their just desserts and making a difference in the lives of others. So, I may go and read the other books in the series of the Long Beach Mysteries, but I may hold off as well. Only time will tell.
review 2: A Cold and Broken Hallelujah opens with a terrible murder. A homeless man is burned to death by three teenage boys. The boys are immediately apprehended, so there's no mystery as to who is responsible. The lead homicide detective, Danny Becket is a bit more interested in the victim than would be expected, however, his wife was killed in a fiery c
... morerash, so that might explain it. The boys took a video of the killing, further cementing their guilt. However, it's discovered that there should have been a 4th boy, and it seems that this boy's life may now be in danger. Each chapter of the book lists something that was in the possession of the murdered man, which helps to personalize him. The book seemed to hint at a conspiracy - a well known defense lawyer who was once a gangster (and may still be), but didn't ultimately deliver on this. Sometimes it drug on a bit and I wanted to see a fuller conclusion, but not a bad read. less
