review 1: Ray is an out of work oilman turned enforcer for a local crime syndicate. When an “accident” kills his wife and leaves his son disabled, Ray enlists the help of his cousin in settling things with the gang he believes caused the fatal wreck. Waite brings a dark story of the modern-day wild west, where the conflicts are now between drug cartels and the desperate men who get sucked into their world. Those who like gritty, literary westerns like No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarty will appreciate this western noir.
review 2: I have no idea why so many people like this book. I thought it was dull, and the action was so few and far between that I fell asleep several times waiting for something to happen. What I really disliked about this novel was all of t
... morehe internal dialogue and recapping of events, which dragged on the momentum. Maybe it is a great book, but I just didn't connect with it, primarily because I normally do not read this kind of book. I didn't find the writing particularly stellar, either. There were several passages I had to reread because it was either poorly written, or the segue between paragraphs was either obtuse, or non-existent. There were also a few typographically errors, which always irks me, especially when the book is published by such a reputable publisher. less
