review 1: I was a bit slower on the uptake with the murderer than I should have been, but I got there. The Balkan storyline interested me and brought back memories of reading coverage in the 90s, and the theme of revenge is one that never fails to fascinate. Overall though I went with three stars. Probably a 3.5 if half-stars were allowed, but as they aren't I downgraded rather than up. The book kept me reading and gripped, but the denouement felt emotionally barren. It felt very black and white despite laying the foundation for a palette of grey shades.
review 2: A very different kind of novel from Val McDermid, and well worth reading. It's quite a slow burn in part I think because of the structure - there are many narrative strands. The story begins with the discovery
... moreof a skeleton on the roof of an abandoned building in Edinburgh, and takes us back into the recent, traumatic past of the Balkans, before resolving back in the present day. Very bleak exploration of themes of justice and revenge. less

Another interesting, enjoyable and well plotted mystery. A stand alone. Recommended

Bit disappointed in this. Felt like a lecture rather than a novel
