review 1: This book was for my mystery book club meeting. I thought the book started out really slow, even though there were 2 mysteries going on, both of them cold cases. One was centered around a father that walked out on his wife and daughter over 20 years ago, and the second one was around a kidnapping that went horribly wrong. The book didn't have chapters, but was broken up into sections based on the day and location; it did a lot of jumping back and forth from the past to the present. The slowness was driven by lots and lots of description, as well as a lot of British slang. Although the book was slow, I thought the author did a good job of making the cold case mysteries interesting, tying everything together at the end.
review 2: This book proved to me that p
... morereconceived ideas are dangerous. I would never have chosen to read this book normally. British, with much of it set in the 80's during the miners strike, it sounded dreary as hell. I had to read it for my book group though, and I'm so pleased I did. I love a mystery story, and this is what it was. A fast-paced action thriller this book is not, but it moved at just the right pace switching between past and present effortlessly. The characters were believable and the plot was easy to care about. This book is a proper 'whodunnit' and 'whydunnit'. Fab. less
