review 1: This is the first Val McDermid book that I've read. The premise of this book is interesting, a 20-year old kidnapping/murder case that was recently (re)opened because an investigative journalist found a poster/painting that connects to the old crime. At the same time a mom on a mission to save her dying son is looking for her father who she thought walked away from his family around the same time the kidnapping/murder happened. I thought it was pretty good until late in the story towards the end when it started to lose steam. After what I thought was good story development at the beginning, I was disappointed with the ending because I felt like it was rushed and abrupt, as well as kind of bland. Still I guess I found it an interesting introduction to her work and I think I... more'll try her other books as well.
review 2: Unfairly, I compare this to the Tony and Carol series, which I read after watching the British TV series "Wire in the Blood". I like the female protagonist quite well, however, and I will read more of this author. Val McDermid has earned my admiration as a writer of complex crime stories, a director, and for her understanding of the human psyche. This understanding encompasses the usual neuroses of damaged people, as well as the thought process and emotions of those damaged people who are totally identified with their beliefs and pain, beyond repair. less

Mmmmm not sure, it was probably only the local geography that really kept me interested.

Lengthy, but pretty decent read. Want a longish crime novel - do go ahead!
