review 1: Annelise had it all planned out: graduate high school, go to a local university, and then get as far away from Florida as possible. It didn't include her high school snatching her diploma away from her, leaving her broke and unwilling to return home to her abusive father and horrible stepmother. Out of options, it's nothing short of a miracle when Annelise runs into Ronan. He promises her a new life... far from Florida... far from her abusive father... and far away from the people that don't understand her. Unable to resist, Annelise lets herself be taken to a mysterious island in the center of the North Sea, to go to a school that trains girls into becoming successful women. What Ronan failed to mention is the girls are training to become Watchers, an elite group that par... moretners with vampires to go on perilous missions. This wasn't exactly what Annelise had in mind when Ronan offered her a new beginning, but quitting isn't up for discussion. Actually, quitting guarantees death, as does losing a challenge. In fact, if Annelise makes one wrong step, she might just find herself on the wrong end of a blade. Annelise soon learns she's got to watch her back, because only so many of the girls can make it, no one can be trusted, and everyone is willing to do anything it takes to win. I give this book 2/5 stars because from the summary on the back of the book, I thought it was going to be a little more along the lines of Hunger Games, when in reality it was anything but. The plot line I found to be boring at times, and there weren't too many twists. Plus, the book sometimes got a little dark for my tastes. I did like the idea behind the book, and Annelise's wit throughout it. Overall, I think my expectations of the book were too high, like I was expecting something a little different than what the book delivered, so I was left a underwhelmed.
review 2: Wow, I had low expectations for this book, I just picked it up on a whim. I couldn't get enough of it. Although it was very reminiscent of the Vampire Academy series, this was a lot more gory and bloody. It was refreshing that we had to go with Drew on her journey and it wasn't a OMG she's great a everything. actually she wasn't so it was nice to see her grow through the book. I appreciated the skips and gaps in time, or else the book would have been far too boring. AAANNNDDD I can't get enough of Ronan! less
