review 1: Police in the small Canadian town of Trafalgar find old bones in the woods, and open an old investigation.For me, this book represents the danger of choosing an audiobook based on a two-line summary in the online catalog. I was expecting small-town Canada and an interesting cold case. I was not expecting descriptive prostitution, drugs, child pornography, violence, etc. I'm not denying that it was realistic, but those are not topics I read about for pleasure. I only finished it because I wanted to find out whodunnit. It was a fairly unpleasant experience, even if the characters and the setting were well-drawn.

Despite the cozy British Columbia setting, the author brings th... moree full range of evils to the laid-back town of Trafalgar, with flawed, but likeable characters.Constable Molly Smith is with her boyfriend, Mountie Adam Tocek when Adam receives a call for the searching talents of Norman the dog in locating a missing boy in the wilderness campgroung. Norman not only finds the boy, but human bones that turn out to be Brian Novak, missing for 15 years. Sgt John Winters reopens the cold case and finds the remains of the Novak family still suffering from the fallout of the disappearance of the husband and father. When the investigation stalls, Winters turns to Molly's memories of her time with the family as a teenager to gain perspective on the case.This series doesn't receive the recognition it deserves - the characters are well written with depth that slowly developes. The interactions between the hippies and the law and Molly caught in both worlds are both enjoyable and thought provoking. less
