review 1: Viktor Ingolfsson is a very accomplished writer. I generally do not read crime but have found both the "House of Evidence" and "The Flatey Enigma" fascinating. The story of a man's attempt to bring the railway to Iceland in the first half of the 20th century does not on the face of it sound very appealing but I was hooked. The story gathers pace but never loses its essential quietness and poise. It provides quite an insight into Iceland and its social classes, its relations with other European nations and powers over two world wars. The most shocking revelation is handled with extraordinary compassion and humanity.
review 2: This is a mystery set in Iceland and takes place in 1973 with diary entries from 1910-1945. In each short chapter, we also get diary entri
... morees from the main character, Jacob Kieler. I found this an excellent mystery and enjoyed the slowly developing plot, which led to an outcome that I didn't suspect. However, I didn't think that most of the characters were well developed - the reader seemed held at a distance, but this might be because it was translated from the Icelandic. I found the information about railroads and life in Iceland fascinating. I will definitely read another of Ingolfsson's books less
