review 1: Okay, so obviously I'm enjoying how consistently Ingolfsson is. Plus I got to feel smug about having my pet theory proved correct.Anyway - the one that takes place in 1960s Iceland, rather than in modern times. I liked the idea of the setting and it was obviously well-researched (one learns at the end that the authors grandparents lived on Flatey). It also had that perspective that I like in my historical novels - I've studied the experience of the US, Japan, and the UK during WWII, so it's interesting to read about how things were viewed in the Nordic countries, since they aren't often mentioned in textbooks.
review 2: Set in 1960 on a remote Icelandic island. The novel feels as if it has a slow pace and yet the whole action takes place over a very few days, s
... moreo that's misleading. There is a current story and mystery (the discovery of a corpse on an uninhabited island, followed by another apparently associated death; various events of the previous decades; and a literary puzzle based on the Flatey Book. Full of references to Icelandic sagas, therefore, with echoes in the modern story. Quirky and full of dry humour, especially regarding food and other discomforts of daily life in a small and remote community. I enjoyed this book - I didn't make any attempt to solve the enigma, not sure whether it is possible to do so although the italicised sections seemed full enough perhaps to suggest you might be able to, and I also didn't work out what had actually happened to the marooned man. less

Unique and unusual. Combines 1960's and ancient history as in the Icelandic Sagas. I loved it.

Slow moving book with not much of a story.
