review 1: Ambitious book with time period well covered back and forth by use of diaries kept by a main character. Interesting the keen student young man leaving Iceland, studies in Denmark then Germany. His first train ride ever setting him on an obsession throughout his life to build a railway in Iceland. WWI details of student life and travel. His work in America then to England and return ten plus years later to Iceland. WWII from a very different angle of Icelandic residence, connections to Germany and England. I found this interesting. That all comes from diaries of the last generation discovered and studied by the police team attempting to solve the current death and perhaps connections...to the first and other mysteries. Different read....
review 2: Intriguing, r
... moreeally didn't see what was coming until just a few pages before the mystery was solved, and even then, didn't quite know how it was pulled off. But I could've done with less focus on trains and railways. I get that the railway in Iceland was meant to be a major impetus in the character's life, but the description of this book was that it included Icelandic history, not a history of railroads. It drug on too long. less

Interesting. Icelandic mystery. Author writes well or is translated well.

Awesome. The list of northern writers I love is now longer :-)

Pretty typical whodunit, but I enjoyed the Icelandic setting.
