review 1: This book seemed very slow at the beginning as the author builds a sense of place for the story. The characters seemed a bit uninteresting to me initially although I liked Grimur and it was obvious that Kjarlton had something to hide. The use of passages from the Flatey book was the part that kept me reading initially. As the story progressed, I became more interested both in the enigma and the murder mystery. I must say I could it stop reading during the last half of the book. I was somewhat surprised by the ending and I was also quite satisfied by the ending, but no spoilers here.the author clearly has a strong sense of the islands of Iceland and their people as well as a deep understanding of how a single book can capture the imagination of a people. Really qualit... morey reading g material although I am not sure the average mystery person will take the time to get into this book which really is a shame.
review 2: Not as good as House of Evidence, but worth it for a glimpse into the author's childhood memories of remote Icelandic island life in the 60s. The enigma itself is interesting, the sort of literary puzzle that those of us who live as much through books as we do through the rest of the world dream of having placed before us. On a side note, I do find myself wondering if anything was lost or gained through the translation process. Regardless, it is worth the read and, Kindle Prime folks, it is available through the Lending Library, so indulge yourself. less
