review 1: This book is a very well written novel about an 11 year old, in the late 50’s. The book is very easy to read and contains a very well developed main character (Victor Vollmer). It’s funny, but you don’t learn the main characters name until the very last page of the book. The characters that Victor engages with come alive in this book; they too are well developed. The book deals with some engaging topics; from stuttering; deafness; segregation and Jim Crow laws. It also delves into the dark areas of the human experience, such as: abuse; possible adultery; adult drunkeness; and bullying. The author paints the backdrop in rich colors: such as: no air conditioning (as people could not afford it back in the late 50’s); baseball and hot summer days; newspaper carriers an... mored so much more. This book is a very satisfying Sunday afternoon read. I would highly recommend a read on this. I also like the cover; which alludes to a time long gone. Lastly, I learned some great sayings: “Speech was given to man to disguise his thoughts.” And “One is more likely to find truth in fiction.” And “Reading makes you smart.”
review 2: The "paperboy" in the story recounts a month of his life when he learned some important life lessons while substituting for his friend's paper route. Suffering from a severe stutter, taking over the paper route is difficult for the boy especially on collection day. During his stint as "The Paperboy", he learns lessons about friendship, family, prejudices, and bravery. I thought this was an outstanding story and will be recommending it to kids who loved books like Wonder and Out of My Mind. less

I wanted to give this away for Christmas, but I wanted to read it first. Loved every minute of it.

Captures a time very well -- good story and wonderful insight into what it's like to be isolated.

The beginning is a little slow, but it comes together nicely and has a powerful ending.
