review 1: This is your typical "young boys go to school together in a rather medieval setting and learn stuff" kind of book. There are some interesting political dynamics (should commoners be educated, should women be educated, etc.) and also a fair bit of intrigue, which is nice. There is a reasonably elaborate plot line involving a few of the masters at the Knightly Academy, which adds a little much-needed spice to this otherwise pallid book. Virtually everything about this book was just okay. The character development was okay. The plot was okay. The writing was okay. Ms. Haberdasher took every trope belonging to this type of fiction and used them with astonishing liberality. It was an easy read, but I won't be looking for the rest of the series. I'd rather reread Harry Potter or... more the Tamora Pierce books, honestly.
review 2: I liked this book a lot because it was a mysterious, page turner type of book, that I was so interested in, that I finished it in a few hours. This book is about a servant boy, who is the first one in five years from the school he worked at, to get accepted in Knightly Academy, and how he becomes friends with to other kids that are not form knightly decent, and how they deal with school, enemies, the headmasters daughter, pranks, and more. I recommend this book to anyone who likes twists, mysteries, and odd settings, as it is like this, and it is now one of my favourite books. less

Set in boys' boarding school in fictional setting. A bit like Harry Potter without the magic.
