review 1: This is an unusual collection of short stories written by a young woman influenced by the traditional Vietnamese ghost stories she learned from her grandmother. Having visited Vietnam and read many books about its culture, these stories filled some of the gaps in my understanding of a very complex culture. Most of the stories are set in Vietnam, and a few in the US with Vietnamese American characters of different generations and outlooks. All of the stories have unexpected twists, often electrifying supernatural beings or events, so they are hard to put down in the middle. As Valerie Martin writes on the back cover, "Terror and wonder walk hand in hand."
