Jason and Azazel Apocalypse
review 1: I have mixed feelings about this book, it felt really different from the first trilogy. Problems I had with it 1) I hate time jumps, 2) I usually hate frame narratives, 3) I usually hate new characters. The incident that happened in the past is very slowly revealed through flash backs throughout the book. The devices Chambers uses are so predictable and transparent. I can understand from a writer's perspective why she did what she did but I love Jason and Azazel together. Of course, when they are together there is less conflict, but that isn't necessarily true as flash backs reveal. I can see why she separated them though to create another plot. I respect her for trying to have Azazel make different choices. Jason does sort of come off as an abusive boyfriend in ... morethis book though which is something I never thought of him as, for me this mars my image of him. I grew to be okay with Kieran, but even though Jason acts super crazy and obsessive I still loved him and want them to be together. There is so much violence in the books it is astonishing. At a certain point I guess I just became desensitized to it. The character death in this book really got to me. I feel that the overall theme is that love is a battlefield and you have to fight for what you want. And so the battle rages on.
review 2: The next Jason and Azazel trilogy picks up with Azazel being a little older and a little wiser. In trademark Chambers style, it's full-throttle edge-of-your-seat from page one. Intensely psychological, relentlessly introspective, The Stillness in the Air is full of action and brutality and hope and grace. It's the end of the world, and Azazel has supposedly moved on. But Jason can never seem to let her go. As the world descends further into chaos, they both have increasing powers. And they're still drawn together, by circumstances if not by choice. I love the way Chambers interrogates the nature of true love by showing its darkest and most primal side. I loved this book. It was just as riveting as the last series. It was really interesting to see the characters in radically different circumstances, and the impact this had on their behavior and feelings for each other. We get to meet some new characters, like Azazel's bodyguard/boyfriend Kieran. We also see some old favorites in surprising new roles, like Marlena, Hallam, Chance, and Sutherland. Once I picked it up, it was really hard to put down. This is a must read for fans of the series. less
