review 1: The Jehovah's Witnesses' beliefs and interpretations regarding the prophecies in the Book of Daniel and their application to the modern world. Again, rife with historical and linguistic inaccuracies, but the pictures are vivid and it does a good job of laying out what the Jehovah's Witnesses believe. I suspect that I wouldn't be as bothered about the inaccuracies if they came from a more openly mystically-inclined religious tradition (eg: Sufism, Mormonism, and Chasidism) -- the Jehovah's Witnesses DO have many mystical beliefs, but they make such a fuss about being grounded in historical/academic/linguistic readings, and downplay their mystical aspects to such an extent, that their academic weaknesses stand out the most clearly.
review 2: This book, published
... moreby the world headquarters of the Jehovah's Witness sect, contains, as do any of their publications of this nature, a plethora of highly questionable and bogus chronology. The anonymous author(s) attempts to give a basic commentary on the Biblical book of Daniel from a Jehovah's Witness point of view, using their own devised chronology. This has to be one of the worst attempts to explain the book of Daniel I have ever encountered. I do not recommend it to any serious student of the Bible or history.I filed my copy in my personal library under "Religious Cults" along with all their other publications. Some quotes from the book..."'the appointed times of the nations' ended in October 1914" (page 61)"They began with the desolation of Judah and Jerusalem in the seventh lunar month (Tishri 15) of 607 B.C.E... From that point to 1 B.C.E. is 606 years. The remaining 1,914 years stretch from then to 1914 C.E. Thus, the 'seven times,' or 2,520 years, ended by Tishri 15, or October 4/5, 1914 C.E." (pages 96-97)"For years before World War I, the remnant of these anointed ones publicly warned that 1914 would see the conclusion of 'the appointed times of the nations.'" (page 142)"'the appointed times of the nations' ended in 1914 C.E., Jesus Christ, as David's royal heir, could rightfully receive Kingdom rule...[the] Kingdom was established in heaven in 1914." (page 146)"God's 'time appointed' to end Gentile domination of the earth came in 1914 when he set up the heavenly Kingdom." (page 261) "Ever since that period began in 1914, Michael [the archangel, also known as Jesus Christ according to Jehovah's Witnesses] has been standing as King in heaven." (page 289) less
