review 1: Once I started this one, I couldn't put it down. Right off, it reminded me of that old movie, "Shane" though it is not a western. A boy (Foster) and his mother are trying to sell an old, rundown, farm after his father has died. The mom has a questionable boyfriend that keeps coming around and Foster's dog obviously doesn't trust him. Foster doesn't care for the man either, he is slimy, smiling only when the mom is around to see it. One day a stranger comes walking down the road and stops for a drink of water. So begins a father/son relationship. It is a fast, good read.
review 2: This story will stick with me for quite awhile. I am always saddened when I read stories of parents (particularly mothers) who chose boyfriends and their need for a relationship o
... morever the needs of their children. The sadness comes from the reality of how frequently this happens. This glimpse at Foster's life left me grateful for the 'boring' normalcy of my family life. I would have chosen a different end for this book, but I suppose we often do. A great read for students in grades 5 and up. less
