review 1: By all accounts, it should have been brilliant, it had lovely writing and a brilliantly evoked character in Grace painfully insecure and beautifully written, proving fragility in women can be shown just as interestingly as strength (or, as I feel, far more so) but it felt like pretty air - I had an awful short story I was incredibly proud of described similarly -- it has lovely themes, and he potential to be poignant, but it's too wrapped up in its image to make an impact - the first chapters are painfully slow, and te big reveal, while horrific loses its edge, as does Grace's melancholy, the main character didn't have anything resembling a spine and could be sweet and fragile, but could also b a complete idiot. Flora may as well nto be there as she is her dual plot of gri... moreef and love, rather than any discernible character behind those things, and despite being lovely, and having great potential for impact, it feels far too shallow.
review 2: A quiet gem of a novel -- moving, with a flawless sense of place and time, and sympathetic about the small concerns of people in a small village, who nevertheless have a deep sense of the huge questions about what it means to live in community. A novel whose effortless tone and simplicity of plot belies the tremendous achievement of making these characters seem completely real and lovable. This would make a terrific book club choice. less

Just couldn't hold my interest enough to finish it. Only made a third of the way into it.
