review 1: Gabe never fit in, believing he was cursed. He’d gone from foster home to foster home until he ended up in a home for boys, following the death of his parents eleven years earlier. He knows when something bad is going to happen and people will die, and feels he can’t let anyone get close. He’s unnerved when a self-assured boy of about his age says he knows Gabe and he’s just like him and others they know. Gabe lets himself be talked into take a trip to meet Michael; the man who’ll explain everything. He finds what’s explained to be interesting and astonishing, especially the part where he’s supposed to be a guardian protector and have all of these abilities to fight demons and hence save the world. He’s never fought a fight in his life. What I liked abou... moret the story was that yes, Gabe does pick up things very, very easily, and yet he doesn’t come across as a Mary Sue. Confidence does not come with learning how to do things well in such a short period of time and in that he stays true to character. And I found it easy to feel Gabe’s emotions as he confronts some truths and begins some relationships. As an adult I have an issue with the teens breaking rules all the time even though things always work out for the best. But I can easily see how this makes the book more interesting to the young adult crowd. Not an especially new overall concept for a young adult book, but I found the subject matter entertaining and the main characters likeable. I’ll be reading the next book in the series.Four stars as read by an adult, but I could easily see this as a five star for a younger reader.
review 2: I wanted to like this book, really I did! I mean just look at that cover!!!! =O it's gorgeous! The book itself needs editing. There were parts where a handful of sentences were in Sophie's POV that could have either been completely eliminated or done so that they didn't just burst out in the middle of Gabes POV. The idea of the story was interesting, but I felt that the book as a whole was telling me more often then showing me what was happening. The character development needs quite a bit of work as well. It's a story I may have enjoyed reading as a preteen.... Maybe.... less
