review 1: This book is like a decorated object, to be enjoyed in its own right. I didn't realise until the end that the illustrator is one of the authors. I really related to his artwork. It's a mix of rough and smooth, different media, a love of gravelly darks, rich contrasts, and characterisation. He's very good at his work. The cover is deliciously ornate, without being over the top, and the book design has a 'spare no expense' quality, that is delectable when so many books are manufactured with cost minimisation at the forefront. (Understandably.) The writing is accomplished without being literary, and it has the quality that some writing does, of the author being affiliated with the film industry; (not surprising) the scenes are very visual like a film sequence, and some of the... more small interactions between characters and their surroundings are a little like film clichés. They're not clumsy or offensive at all. They just strike a well worn memory chord as you read them. "oh I've seen that sequence before in (American) films many, many times.' This is part of why they work for young people, especially in films. It's a way of telling a favourite joke over an over again in different guises, and kids recognise it subconsciously and laugh, enjoy it. (For those who have no idea of what I'm talking about, I point to the example of the scene where Katherine goes to bed out of sorts with North, and what happens with the candles. The back-forth obvious, symbolic banter is very typical of American films, almost in that exact sequence and number of turns.) But again, I didn't find it offensive at all. It's a good story, well told. By the way, my nine year old loved it and has moved on to book Two.
review 2: this is the first book in the guardians series by william joyce. it focuses on the nicholas st. north and ombric the wizard. this starts the series off with a bang as the nightmare king, pitch, is released from his centuries long imprisonment. what follows is a good read as ombric, the most powerful wizard, takes on a young apprentice by the name of nicholas st. north and trains him so they may fight the coming evil. a good first book and i look forward to reading the next ones! less
