review 1: Wendy Webb is an interesting writer. I have read two of her books. This one and The Fate of Mercy Alban. Both books were very similar and are fun mysteries with a very tangible creepiness about them. The problem is, more so in this book than the first I read, that they are just loaded with cliches and the exploration of the two main characters I have read thus far are fairly shallow. Webb is very adept at recounting the stories of the main character's ancestors, but oddly tends to write rather boring/borderline irritating protagonists. I understand that the book itself is actually about the ancestors, but I would enjoy the books so much more if I could invest in and care about the main characters. It doesn't matter if I hate the main characters or love them, but it seems l... moreike I should feel one way or the other. I just end up not caring about them because they aren't very nuanced and don't seem to reflect real people. I would definitely read more of her books, they are entertaining, but I think they could be taken to a whole new level of writing if the main characters had more depth.
review 2: I listened to the audio book. Had I noticed that it was a ghost story, and really, the ghost story didn't start until about half-way through, I probably wouldn't have bothered with it. As it was, it was entertaining to listen to while I worked out. I found the ending too 'easy'. I would have liked a more logical and believable ending because I simply don't believe in ghosts. I found the use of the cliches the weakest part of the writing. The author's descriptive writing otherwise was quite colorful although some bordered on the purple variety, and some was a bit hard to envision. I thought the book was 'okay', given my tastes. Not a 'serious' novel, but entertainment when there isn't a better option. less
