review 1: This book broke my heart. That's not why I'm giving it four stars. It was a very well constructed book. A THING happens way later that catches you by surprise even though in a way you see it coming. I feel like the best way for me to talk about this book is to focus on one character, one aspect at a time. Without further ado...Honestly, my favorite character was the Zoe's little brother Noah. Maybe I related to him on some level, but he was my favorite character. He and the museum of intangible things Zoe created for him gave me a lot of feels. I wanted to protect him.I felt like Danny was a little cliche, a nice hook for when things got too bad, but I'm not disputing instalove anymore. I've come to except that within fiction it will always be a thing, and perhaps in life ... moreit is a thing just a very rare on. I want to talk about Zoe, but I don't know how. I love Zoe, I do. I love mental illness being represented in YA fiction. I love Hannah and Zoe's friendship. It is very similar to mine and my best friend's friendship. I feel as though Zoe was created with one intent though and that was to teach Hannah about life. I never like that. People do not exist solely to teach other people. Aside from that, Zoe was a shaped character. She had interests. She had quirks. Big ones. She was sick, though, and I cannot tell how I feel about how it was written. For now, I will leave it with uncertainty. Now this part my get a little SPOILERY. ***************************************While we can all agree Hannah taking/allowing Zoe to go on this road trip was a not-so-smart move, also know that it shows her humanness. It shows how badly she wants her friend not to be sick, how badly she wants to control and make things better on her own. And even though it's not the right way she wanted to help her friend. Of course, you could argue she was being greedy and selfish. She needed her friend. She needed to get away. All of that was human.Maybe that's what I love about this book. I love the fact that it was really imperfect. The writing was well done. The plot was constructed well, but everyone in it screwed up a whole lot. Danny and Noah didn't, but neither of them were the main characters and Noah, at least, does have some baggage. So, I gave this book four stars. It was a good book. It made me feel things. It does teach you things, and in away at least Zoe was here to teach things. She wasn't simply a non-person or just an illness. She was right about a lot of things. Maybe she went about them a little extremely, but she was human too. And after all, that's all anyone is.
review 2: Not your average road trip book. A cool way to incorporate vocabulary. An endearing look at friendship where one has mental health issues and the other is desperately trying to help salvage her friend's lucidity before it is to late. Favorite funny quote: "Well, she's like a mom and a nurse, and you are a seventeen-year-old hot dog vender. She probably felt like she didn't need to consult you." less

I'm not sure this is entirely appropriate as YA, but it is a heartfelt read.
