review 1: Powerful, inspiring, eye-opening, joyful.....this book is hard to describe without falling into the "one-word" trap! Will Allen is truly a gift to those around him and his can-do attitude is contagious. This book is part biography/memoir, part how-to and a lot more. I admire the various systems that he tried to tap into in order to fulfill his dream of bringing fresh food into the inner city (Fish farming, hydroponics, vermiculture, composting, CSAs, renewable energy). The creativity he showed definitely spoke to me (my daughter and I begin our vermiculture project this week); but I also thoroughly enjoyed the way he wove the history of black farming, the Great Migration to the inner cities and the effect it has had on the diet of those that live there now. He doesn't... more blame, he states facts and counts his blessings that for him, he had a very different life in some ways. His attempt to try to separate the idea of farming as a person of color from that of the slavery and sharecropping days is important. His desire to help others and be as self-sufficient as possible while teaching and helping others is fulfilled in part by his willingness to share his success, to share his ideas, innovations and methods. The schools of learning that he has helped create across the nation are testaments to his idea that it all starts with one person. Whether you grow a potted plant, enjoy fresh food or just want to learn a little history.......this is an excellent book that can't help but touch you and change the way you see the world.
review 2: 3.5 stars, almost 4 - I think Will has amazing ideas for the local food movement and I feel we could all make huge community changes if we could spread and act on ideas like his. I was hoping this book would go into greater detail about his ideas and the projects/programs he has put together. I was less interested in the biographical sections about Will's past in the book, yet understand their importance in conveying how he got to where he is today. less
